(500) Days of summer
Tom (Joseph Gordon-Levitt ) is an architect who works as a writer in a greeting card company, when Summer (Zooey Deschanel), his new boss assistant, walks into the office he knows he has found the woman he want to spend the rest of his life with. They start dating, but this girl does not believe en true love (or boyfriends) and soon decides to put aside the boyfriend and girlfriend part to just be friends. This breaks Tom’s heart and makes him wallows in self pity. Even when his friends and teenager sister (Chloe Moretz) try to console him, he cannot simply forget who he thinks is “the one”.
Based on a real romance of one of its writers, (500) Days of Summer tells the failed love story of Tom Hansen and Summer Finn through an anachronical narrative, which covers the five hundred days that this relationship lasts, showing the highs and downs, happy, sad and funny moments they spend together, while the romantic male protagonist of the film tries to understand why the love of his life left him.
At the very beginning of this romantic comedy, directed by Marc Webb, the narrator warns the spectator that this film “it is not a love story”, and soon it can be figured out the hilarious, sad and dramatic tone of this movie from the first ironic disclaimer: "Any resemblance to people living or dead is purely coincidental ... Especially you, Jenny Beckman ... Bitch”.
While the movie narrates Tom’s ramblings through the days he spend with Summer, it turns out to be an ingenious and amusing story and we can easily understand why this independent film managed to draw attention over many others productions; the witty and clever script (written by Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber), the strong screenplay, the superb direction, the nonlinear narrative and tints of musical, (some dancing in the street included) make it more than just another romantic movie.
It is important to highlight the director’s work (Marc Webb), the foreground and intimate atmosphere of the film makes the spectator feel that Tom and Summer are all universe in this story. This is enhanced by the terrific acting; Joseph Gordon-Levitt dives into Tom personality deeply making him absolutely credible , on the other side, Zooey Deschanel is simply perfect to the role, it can be thought that she was born to play Summer, but what really makes (500) days of Summer work is that it feels realistic. All what it happens during the movie could really had happened to someone, somewhere.
By the way, the soundtrack deserves an especial comment. It includes a gorgeous selection of artist as Feist, Regina Spektor, The Pixies, the Smiths, Belle and Sebastian and others, that create, along the film, an enchanting atmosphere for every moment of joy, anger and despair. The dimension that the music adds to the events simply enhances the greatness of this movie.
This is a film that is a pleasure to take in more than once, and will only further enhance the appreciation of the former.
